Today, the phrase describes any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a hidden danger inside.The Mythological StoryAccording to epic poetry, including Virgil’s Aeneid, the Greeks constructed a massive wooden horse and hid a select group of elite warriors inside, including Odysseus. The rest of the Greek fleet pretended to give up and sailed away to the nearby island of Tenedos.They left behind a single Greek spy, Sinon, who convinced the Trojans that the horse was an offering to the goddess Athena meant to make Troy impregnable.
